(06:02:10) CarlosRuiz: Hi
(06:03:02) mjmckay: Good morning
(06:03:13) needle58: hi
(06:05:28) CarlosRuiz: any topic do you want to review today?
(06:05:28) CarlosRuiz: or just review the pending tasks and see how can we advance?
(06:06:32) needle58: i have worked on #14
(06:06:36) mjmckay: Pending and next steps.
(06:06:55) needle58: i have prepared a mindmap i wanted to send to the pmc list but used the wrong account
(06:07:12) needle58: so the mail is pending approval now
(06:07:16) CarlosRuiz: yes, I just reviewed
(06:07:24) CarlosRuiz: the message passed - reading it now
(06:07:33) needle58: good, thanks
(06:08:45) CarlosRuiz: you could access the db?
(06:09:29) needle58: i used the wiki and its special pages only
(06:09:44) needle58: that provided enough insight
(06:10:59) CarlosRuiz: ah ok - the Documentation_WikiInventory_20100819 has the selects to access the db as comments on the first cell of each sheet
(06:11:55) needle58: i saw that. thats why i asked you recently about sql access
(06:12:26) needle58: now starting from the wiki pages there seemed enough info in it
(06:12:55) needle58: could you look at the mindmap?
(06:13:02) CarlosRuiz: yep
(06:13:28) needle58: so for my feeling there is already a certain structure in the wiki pages
(06:13:37) needle58: based on the Top category
(06:13:45) needle58: and its subcategories
(06:14:41) needle58: most of the uncategorized pages eem to be in the manual area
(06:15:27) needle58: and there are lots of "user from xy" or "user speaking abc" categories which can be subsummized under community for example
(06:17:06) CarlosRuiz: those "user speaking abc" are pages explaining some functionality?
(06:18:19) needle58: i do not think so
(06:18:48) CarlosRuiz: ah, you mean the talk pages of the User:NNN
(06:19:06) mjmckay: In the wiki, can pages have more than one category?
(06:19:14) needle58: yes they can
(06:19:34) needle58: CarlosRuiz: that is where they come from, yes
(06:21:17) CarlosRuiz: what do you mean with "used in sf bug tracker"
(06:22:14) needle58: the bug tracker has attributes for categorisation and grouping
(06:22:49) mjmckay: The mindmap shows what exists. (Great work by the way!) Do you have the goal you'd like to see - the desired taxonomy?
(06:23:08) needle58: the categories are very detailed relating to the functionality or "modules"
(06:23:28) peter2000 [~peter2000@203.116.235.55] entered the channel.
(06:24:03) peter2000: Hi everyone.
(06:24:08) CarlosRuiz: Hi Peter
(06:24:16) peter2000: Sorry being late.
(06:24:22) needle58: mjmckay: thanks - what do you mean?
(06:25:32) CarlosRuiz: Peter - we're reviewing the mindmap Dirk sent to mail list
(06:27:12) peter2000: ok. Downloading now.
(06:28:37) CarlosRuiz: Dirk
(06:28:45) needle58: yes
(06:29:09) CarlosRuiz: how can we advance? we could start categorizing the most popular?
(06:29:12) CarlosRuiz: or joining content?
(06:29:17) CarlosRuiz: what could be the next step?
(06:29:58) CarlosRuiz: ah - or to review a proposal of categories - perhaps that's what Michael is pointing
(06:29:58) red1 has left the channel (quit: Read error: Connection reset by peer).
(06:30:18) mjmckay: If we started over, what would the mindmap look like? If you start with the premise that information is free - if you can find it - the categories that we use should help people locate the information they need. There can be several different sets of categories that each describe the information. The SF categories approach use a modular point of view. Developers use a different language...
(06:30:20) mjmckay: ...than users to categorize information. Could we define the categories we want?
(06:30:29) needle58: review the most popular to make sure that they are all catgorized
(06:30:55) red1 [~red1@121.121.229.192] entered the channel.
(06:31:22) needle58: i think there are already a lot of caetgories we want or need
(06:31:41) needle58: some are already structured with subcategories
(06:32:00) needle58: some are beside each other but seem to belong to a common category
(06:32:30) needle58: that is what i called "put it on the same level"
(06:32:45) needle58: it should be helpful for the user toi find the entry points
(06:33:16) needle58: and then walk down to come to the page he is looking for or find out it does not exist
(06:33:44) CarlosRuiz: ah - I see "it does not exist" are the "wanted pages"
(06:33:49) needle58: at the moment i have always the feeling there is apile of pages but i do not know where to start
(06:34:06) needle58: wanted pages i guess com efrom links in pages
(06:34:18) needle58: but the linked page has not been filled with content
(06:34:43) needle58: so it "is" in teh wiki and is not at the same time
(06:36:13) CarlosRuiz: another approach could be to define some prominent categories "i.e. HowTos" and start organizing that category
(06:36:33) needle58: yes
(06:37:33) needle58: we need both
(06:37:44) needle58: better structure hat is there
(06:38:00) needle58: aqnd put in it what is in forums already and not in wiki
(06:38:06) needle58: or somewhere else
(06:38:14) needle58: being faq and howto pages
(06:38:38) CarlosRuiz: what can be first step then?
(06:38:43) CarlosRuiz: I think we all feel the same
(06:38:47) CarlosRuiz: there are a lot of pages
(06:38:47) needle58: my intention is to work on the mind map and propose a "better organized" structure
(06:38:49) CarlosRuiz: but hard to find them
(06:39:04) CarlosRuiz: so the work can be towards -> categorize -> or index
(06:39:20) CarlosRuiz: the categories are indexes of course :-)
(06:39:58) needle58: does the wiki save teh serach phrases?
(06:40:05) needle58: the search
(06:40:27) mjmckay: Are any missing? Any we want to remove? Documentation, as a category, is perhaps redundant? If I was to pick the top five categories - Functional Docs (user documentation), Developer Docs,General (not related to the application), Community, Commercial
(06:40:44) needle58: so we might find out what people are looking for most frequently
(06:41:30) mjmckay: On search, how does it work? I can never get what I'm looking for on the first search.
(06:41:46) needle58: that is also my experience
(06:42:24) needle58: as if i had to know exactly the title of the page i was looking for beforehand
(06:42:55) mjmckay: So perhaps we need to also look at titles AND categories to ensure effective searches?
(06:43:15) CarlosRuiz: Dirk - we can have access to apache logs if needed - not sure how old are saved
(06:43:15) CarlosRuiz: and wiki has set up google analytics - we can have access to that also - google analytics save somewhat of the search words
(06:43:39) needle58: good
(06:44:36) mjmckay: If the search info is good, the top search terms may be the place to start in the categories.
(06:45:27) CarlosRuiz: do you want to ask for access to both resources, Dirk? (apache logs and google analytics) ?
(06:45:52) needle58: yes please
(06:46:46) mjmckay: Is it possible to set/change the categories in the database? If we want to recategorize things, can we use an UPDATE wiki SET ...?
(06:47:47) CarlosRuiz: BTW - Dirk, are you configured as bureaucrat or admin on wiki?
(06:49:07) needle58: sounds nice :) - no i did not hear from idalica up to now
(06:49:29) CarlosRuiz: no - that's managed by red1
(06:49:54) needle58: mjmckay: might be possible
(06:50:22) mjmckay: That could save a lot of time. We could create a translation table from old to new.
(06:50:52) needle58: so that should be another task
(06:50:59) needle58: to find out
(06:51:23) CarlosRuiz: I think I just did - I gave Needle58 sysop and Bureaucrat permissions on wiki - so you can do some additional things now
(06:51:40) needle58: ok
(06:51:59) trifon [~trifon@91-67-146-116-dynip.superkabel.de] entered the channel.
(06:52:22) CarlosRuiz: ok - we're almost done
(06:52:34) mjmckay: Still need the "new" categories - can we set that up in a google doc and work on it this week?
(06:52:37) CarlosRuiz: wondering if you think we must schedule these meetings more frequently
(06:52:53) CarlosRuiz: initially we decided to conduct them each month
(06:53:05) CarlosRuiz: but with pending tasks advancing at faster speed
(06:53:07) needle58: i just logged out and in but ... any difference?
(06:53:28) needle58: biweekly?
(06:53:49) mjmckay: Biweekly would be ok for me.
(06:54:14) CarlosRuiz: ok - I'll set up the meeting schedule and invite you every two weeks
(06:54:19) needle58: fine
(06:54:33) CarlosRuiz: Dirk - probably you can see protected pages now - or protect them
(06:54:45) needle58: ok, i snoop around
(06:55:04) CarlosRuiz: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Setting_user_rights_in_MediaWiki#sysop
(06:55:22) needle58: thanks
(06:56:39) mjmckay: I'll try my hand at task 12 for the next meeting as well.
(06:56:56) needle58: any new todos?
(06:58:19) mjmckay: Building the list of desired categories and mapping to the current list in you map?
(06:59:01) needle58: sounds good
(07:01:08) mjmckay: Got to go - see you in two weeks.
(07:01:21) CarlosRuiz: thanks - I already sent the updated meeting on google calendar
(07:01:23) needle58: byebye
(07:01:46) needle58: see you in two weeks then
(07:02:14) CarlosRuiz: bye thanks
